Bitumen MC 30

MC-30 Cutback Bitumen

General information of MC-30 cutback bitumen

MC-30 cutback bitumen is widely used, especially in cold weather conditions. It temporarily reduces the viscosity of asphalt cement, which makes handling and applying it much easier. As a result, MC-30 becomes highly effective as a base layer coating for road maintenance. Specifically, it helps bond granular materials of the base course to the asphalt layer. Usually, we apply MC-30 by spraying it through a distributor, ensuring an even and efficient application.

To prepare MC-30, we dissolve it in kerosene solvents. In fact, many countries, including those where ATDM operates, add kerosene or other petroleum-based products to bitumen to lower its viscosity. This process results in what we call cutback bitumen. Importantly, ATDM’s MC-30 meets the ASTM D2028-97 standard, reaffirmed in 2004, for medium-curing cutback petroleum asphalts. It consists of penetration-grade bitumen mixed with solvents like kerosene, white spirit, gasoline, and naphtha, which regulate curing time based on specific environmental needs.

ATDM uses the fractional and vacuum distillation of crude oil to produce MC-30. This method guarantees high quality and ensures consistency. Penetration and softening point tests determine the bitumen’s properties, and the thermoplastic characteristics of the bitumen allow it to soften at higher temperatures and harden at lower ones. This specific temperature/viscosity relationship plays a critical role in the performance parameters, such as adhesion, rheology, durability, and application temperature.

Uses of cutback bitumen MC-30

Cutback bitumen MC-30 serves various important purposes. For example, it lowers the viscosity of bitumen, making it easier to apply as a primer to road pavements. In addition, kerosene serves as the primary cutback agent, and we adjust its concentration depending on local conditions. The main advantage of MC-30 is that it is ideal for prime coats and cold applications, given its ease of use. Notably, there’s no need for thinning or heating, which simplifies the process and saves time.

Additionally, MC-30 plays a crucial role in preparing non-asphalt-based courses for subsequent treatments. It is also effective in waterproofing surfaces, blocking capillary voids, and bonding loose mineral particles. As a result, MC-30 is an excellent choice for a variety of construction projects, including road sealing and priming applications.

MC-30 is also widely used in penetrating prime coats and in producing patching or stockpile mixtures. When we mix MC-30 with aggregates, we often include an adhesion agent, which improves the coating of the aggregate surface. This versatility makes MC-30 a top choice for a wide range of road construction and maintenance projects.

Packaging of cutback bitumen MC-30

ATDM prioritizes secure packaging to maintain product integrity. We transport MC-30 in bulk via tankers, ensuring the product remains intact during the journey. Additionally, we package MC-30 in new, thick steel drums placed on pallets to prevent leaks and ensure the product reaches customers in optimal condition.

Safety of cutback bitumen MC-30

When working with MC-30 cutback bitumen, safety is always a priority. Before use, always refer to the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for detailed handling instructions. We recommend transporting, storing, and using the product at the lowest possible temperature. This reduces potential risks and maintains product quality. During application, take care to eliminate any ignition sources, and avoid inhaling vapors. It is also important to avoid direct contact with the product. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including heat protection, when handling hot bitumen. Moreover, ensure that neither the product nor any washings enter stormwater or sewer systems.

Warranty of MC-30 cutback bitumen

ATDM offers a guarantee for the quality of MC-30 cutback bitumen. We collaborate with international inspectors to ensure the quality and quantity of the product are checked during loading. Additionally, our Quality Control (QC) team continuously monitors production. We also provide batch test reports before shipment to confirm that the product meets ASTM and EN 15322:2009 standards. This robust quality assurance process ensures that our customers receive consistent and high-quality products every time.
